Multiple Gaps | Porcelain VeneersVeneers

Porcelain veneers (also called dental laminates or porcelain laminates) are probably the most appreciated cosmetic service that we offer. They aren't the perfect solution for all smile improvements, but can certainly solve a variety of challenges. The high satisfaction rate is due to a few factors.  They are exceptionally natural in appearance, they can alter both shape and shade of existing teeth, in many instances they can be placed with minimal removal of natural tooth structure and they generally are quite durable.  In short, veneers look great, can make big changes, and are conservative and strong.

What kind of problems can porcelain veneers correct?

  • Straighten crooked teeth, quickly like instant orthodontics
  • Cover over discolored teeth
  • Lighten yellow teeth
  • Repair chipped teeth
  • Reinforce cracking teeth
  • Lengthen naturally short teeth
  • Lengthen worn teeth
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Mask deep stains
  • Properly contour misshapen teeth
  • Cover over pitted teeth
  • Correct a slanted smile
  • Widen a narrow smile

Porcelain VeneersWhat exactly are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are custom made to cover the front surface of teeth and are contoured and colored to achieve the desired shape and shade.  These laminates are fabricated by a dental laboratory technician using a precise mold of your teeth and designed according to a prescription that details the planned result.
The natural life-like appearance possible with veneers is due to our ability to create a ceramic (glass-like) substance that has both color and translucency.  The color permits us to control shade.  The translucency allows light to penetrate to the underlying tooth and reflect back in a way that mimics the actual luster of real teeth.
If relatively simple or minor changes are being made then the veneers can be ultra thin and the teeth may need little or no reduction.  When significant changes are sought or optimal contours are a priority then moderate re-contouring of the teeth is usually necessary.

Good durability may seem to be an unexpected feature of thin pieces of porcelain.  While they are fragile and brittle before bonding, once properly adhered they become strong and fracture resistant.  This is similar to plastic laminar counter tops found in many kitchens. Resistance to stain and wear is also characteristic of porcelain veneers.
Brand names such as "Lumineers" or "Da Vinci Veneers" have brought much awareness and publicity to the dental veneering process.  While I have used both of these products, I commonly use others as well, depending on the demands of the situation.

What are drawbacks of dental laminates?

A primary concern is expense.  Typical fees range from $800 to $1600 per tooth.  We happen to be nearer the low end of this scale, but that is still no inconsequential amount.

Other issues are: occasional sensitivity, usually due to tooth removal; a small possibility of chipping or fracturing; eventual probable gum recession which may reveal the junction of veneer and tooth which sometimes is prone to staining. Teeth with veneers can still experience decay.  Individuals who clinch or grind their teeth may not be good candidates for veneers. For these reasons, veneers may need to be replaced.  If veneers fail within three years we replace them at no charge.  A life expectancy of 8-10 years is reasonable and we have patients with veneers functioning after 15 plus years.

You should understand that veneers are irreversible.  They are not removable. Once the teeth are altered they will always need to be covered.

Alternatives to veneers include orthodontics, bonding, teeth whitening and porcelain crowns.

Veneers Before and After | Short and WornWhat is the veneering process?

The procedure usually requires three to four visits.

Diagnosis and treatment planning
This is when you can explore the appropriateness of veneers for your situation - see our section on smile design.  A follow-up consultation is sometimes needed to clarify the plan.

Preparation
To prepare a tooth for a veneer we may remove some enamel from the front, biting edge, and sides.  About 1/2 millimeter of enamel is a common amount to trim.  Local anesthetic may be used to numb the area.  A mold is taken to precisely record the newly shaped teeth and temporary acrylic veneers are placed.  The length of time of the appointment will depend on the condition of your teeth and on how many veneers you are having done.  This visit may last for 30 minutes to several hours.  You will be advised about how much time we expect to need.  Two to three weeks usually pass before we are ready to attach the permanent veneers.

Placement
At this appointment we will check your veneers to make sure they fit properly and that they are the correct size and color.  You will be able to inspect your new veneers before they are placed.  We will work together to make sure that you are satisfied with the result.  If needed, more shaping or trimming of the veneers can be done, as well as shade modifications.  The permanent placement will not occur until you provide approval.  A bonding procedure is employed to securely adhere your veneers in place. This can be a little tedious and usually requires about the same amount of time as the preparation visit.

What can I expect with my new veneers?

After the permanent veneers have been applied you can normally use them just as you would your regular teeth.  Simply brush and floss regularly.  If teeth have been lengthened or spaces closed, an adjustment period is normal.  Most times they will feel like natural teeth.  Veneers are not indestructible, so be a little considerate when biting into hard substances.  Avoid habits like chewing fingernails, ice, pencils, or paperclips and clenching or grinding your teeth.  If we have made a mouth guard to wear at night please use it.
